| Many important and difficult problems need to be solved: analyzing the dispersal of pollutants in the environment, designing new materials, valuing an investment portfolio, and routing messages through the internet. We are a community of faculty and students learning, developing and applying the mathematical and computational methods required to solve problems like these. Take a look at our web pages to find out more about us. Our areas of mathematical study and research focus on applied analysis, computational mathematics, discrete applied mathematics, and stochastic analysis. The application problems we work on come from computers, engineering, finance, and science. Our faculty members'
research is funded by various public and private bodies. Our colleagues serve on the editorial boards of several top journals and are frequently invited to speak at international conferences. The Department of Applied Mathematics at IIT offers Bachelor's, Master of Science, and Doctoral degrees in Applied Mathematics plus a
Master of Mathematical Finance jointly offered with the Center for Financial Markets at the Stuart Business School. Attractions for students include:
- personal attention and small class size,
- a curriculum that combines courses in mathematics with those in application areas,
- a weekly seminar and colloquium series featuring experts from all over the world,
- the Math Club, where undergraduates can explore intriguing aspects of mathematics,
- the world-class city of Chicago
You may apply online for both our undergraduate and graduate programs. As our department continues to develop we are seeking outstanding scholars and educators to join our faculty. Fred J. Hickernell
