Macroscopic Models of Ion Channel Transport

Abstract

This will be a topics talk, drawing on work carried out over the last 5-6 years, principally with Robert Eisenberg, Carl Gardner, and Chi-Wang Shu. The work will focus on the simulation of single ion channels. Topics included are:

(1) A simple steady-state Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) model for the open channel, for which definitive states can be described.

(2) A much more complicated hydrodynamic model of the open channel, for which parametric dependence is of interest. The PNP model is a relaxation limit of this model.

(3) A dynamic model of gating for the infinite channel. This can be interpreted as predicting the opening and closing of the channel, and is based upon traveling waves for the PNP model. The current pulses are consistent with patch clamp recordings.
