Large-Scale Circulations Induced by

Localized Mixing in the Ocean

Abstract

Vertical mixing in the ocean interior is generally assumed to be small. In this talk, we will emphasize that small-scale mixing processes can sometimes induce basin-scale oceanic currents, such as in the case of the so-called Azores Current and Countercurrents, which span approximately 3000 km  zonally in the North Atlantic Ocean. The mechanisms of mixing are explored using numerical models. The importance of incorporating such mixing via parameterizations in ocean models will be emphasized.
